10×10 Photobooks – Russet Lederman
10×10 Photobooks is a nonprofit organization with the mission to foster engagement with the global photobook community through an appreciation, dissemination and understanding of photobooks. Founded in 2012, 10×10 offers an ongoing multi-platform series of public photobook events, including reading rooms, salons, publications, online communities and partnerships with arts organizations and institutions such as the Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh), Fototeca Latinoamericana (Buenos Aires), International Center of Photography (NYC), the Magnum Foundation (NYC), Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the New York Public Library. Past 10×10 Photobooks traveling reading rooms have included 10×10 Japanese Photobooks (collection donated to the International Center of Photography, NYC), 10×10 American Photobooks (collection donated to the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum), CLAP! 10×10 Contemporary Latin American Photobooks (collection donated to the Hirsch Library at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston) and AWAKE, a currently traveling reading room of photobooks and zines that address protest and resistance.
In addition, 10×10’s book-on-books publications have received much critical and public attention. The CLAP! 10×10 Contemporary Latin American Photobooks catalogue was shortlisted for the 2017 Paris Photo-Aperture Photography Catalogue of the Year Award. Reviews for past 10×10 reading rooms and publications have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, American Photo, IMA and FOAM, among others. 10×10’s publications can be found in the following collections: Museum of Modern Art (NYC), Guggenheim Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, San Francisco MoMA, Brooklyn Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, Tate Britain, Pier 24, Art Institute of Chicago, New York Public Library, Museum of Fine Arts Boston and numerous university libraries (Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Cornell, Columbia, etc.) and well-known private book collections. Presenters at 10×10 salons, which offer a space to get together with photobook publishers, authors and collectors in an informal atmosphere over a glass of wine or beer, include Valentina Abenavoli, Takashi Arai, Alejanadro Cartegena, Bruno Ceschel, Jason Fulford, John Gossage, Mikiko Hara, Susan Meiselas, Kevin Messina, Max Pinckers, Yoko Sawada, Barbara Tannenbaum, Matthew Witkovsky, and many others. The global photobook community interacts with 10×10 via our extensive online presence. 10×10’s 7,000 Facebook friends get regular updates on 10×10 projects and favorite photobooks. Weekly Instagram takeovers by fellow photobook enthusiasts and bookmakers share an international array of photobooks with 10×10’s 25,000 Instagram followers.
10×10’s next touring reading room will launch in fall 2018 and present 100 photobooks by female photobook-makers.
